Product Details

  • Every shadowbox contains my original art accompanied by a hand-pinned specimen. “Pinning” is the process of opening a bug’s wings after they’ve passed for preservation.

The background art is hand-drawn on my iPad and printed on archival paper. Every box is signed and dated on the back, and contains my initials inside the border to mark its authenticity.

I strive to maintain high quality craftsmanship while respecting and honoring a specimen’s passing.

    Hanging hardware is already assembled.

All insects are sustainably sourced from responsible conservation farms that protect insect species, counteract deforestation, and provide income to locals in rural areas.

  • Orders are shipped within 2-3 business days. I am not responsible for shipping delays and do not offer returns.

  • I create entomology art in hopes of conveying harmony between the bug’s beauty and honoring life after death.

Anything in my shop labeled (1/3), (2/3), etc, has a background design that is only used for those limited number of shadow boxes. Every shadow box is one of a kind because even if a background is reused the bug is unique. I often match the color scheme to the bug, and I change the border edges for each frame. I retire the design after the 2-3 limited edition shadow boxes are made. Each box is signed and dated on the back, as well as signed on the print itself.

For any shadow boxes not labeled (1/3), (2/3), etc, it simply means that I haven’t limited the amount of times the background art is used. Since I like to draw new designs often, there aren’t a large number made anyway. Since every shadow box has its’ own unique bug, they are still one of a kind.

For most of my larger bubble glass pieces, they are traditionally done in the sense that instead of the art being created by hand using my iPad, I instead am using gouache paint, colored pencils, and watercolor on paper. This process is very tedious and they are not reprinted for other future shadowboxes. Most often my limited edition pieces are created with antique bubble glass frames which are difficult to find. Due to the time, effort, and money that goes into these pieces, this portion of my art is higher priced.

About

Meet the artist behind the work! My name is Jessica Whitteaker and I’m an Illustrator, Product Designer, and Oddities Artist that specializes in Lepidoptera. My goal is to preserve specimen while enhancing their beauty through my illustrations and craftsmanship. The average lifespan of a butterfly or moth is incredibly short, so this is a way of appreciating their beauty longer.

Growing up, I was fascinated by the caterpillars I raised into moths every spring. This taught me the process of growth and change at an early age, and throughout the iterative process of my illustrations I often reflect on metamorphosis as a source of inspiration. My primary influences stem from the Victorian era, Art Nouveau, nature, and fairy tales.

I have a BFA in Communications Design with a focus in Illustration from Pratt Institute alongside a minor in Cinema Studies.

FAQs

  • All insects are sustainably sourced from responsible conservation farms that protect insect species, counteract deforestation, and provide income to locals in rural areas.

This is an ecologically beneficial and sustainable way to preserve insect species, protect endangered species, and conserve native habitats.

  • I find most of my small bones on hikes in the Pine Barrens and clean them myself. The cause of death for these animals cannot be determined but can be assumed to be natural. For other bones such as skulls, I purchase them from Indigenous Peoples.

  • Yes! I sell my artwork at craft shows, primarily the Lunar Faire in New Jersey. It takes place every new and full moon. Follow me on Instagram @jwhitt_art to stay updated on my show schedule. You can find the lunar faire on Instagram @lunarfaire

I occasionally do other events as well.

  • Yes, I would love to bring your idea to life. I can either create entomology art for you or a stand alone illustration/painting. If you have a specimen you want pinned and framed, I can do that as well. Contact me at jwhitt.art@gmail.com or on Instagram @jwhitt_art
